Its Mari's 17th birthday and she and a friend are going to a music concert. On the way they decide to try and buy some grass (marijuana), so they go up to the first person they see who looks like a dealer. Unfortunately the guy they go up to is part of a gang of murderers and perverts who have just escaped from prison. He takes them up to his apartment were the rest of the gang are.
Once inside the apartment they capture the girls and start to rape and torture them for the night. The next day instead of releasing them, they throw them into the trunk of their car and set off to try and get past the border of Canada, but their car breaks down. The gang then take the girls and lead them into the forest at the side of the road were they have broken down.
In a secluded area of the forest they begin there torture and deprivation of the two girls again. One of them makes a run for it at the first opportunity but just as she thinks she's safe, up pops Krug the gang leader. Once they have disposed of her they go back and finish Mari off in brutal fashion.
After killing the girls they clean themselves up and head back to the road, they then go to the nearest house and ask to stay for the night, convincing them they are traveling salesmen who's car as broken down. The family let them stay for the night, but what gang doesn't realize is that the couple are Mari's parents. Mari's mother notices one of the gang is wearing a necklace that they gave to Mari for her birthday. She and her husband head into the woods then and discover the body of their beloved daughter. On arriving back at their house they reap revenge on Mari's killers in a gruesome but deserved way, just keep repeating to yourself it's only a movie............
Last House On The Left is a gruesome film and like I spit on your grave can leave a sour taste in your mouth, but unlike I Spit On Your Grave it is actually well made except for the bungling cop sequences, although they do had a bit of humor to the strong nature of the film. I also find that despite what the films theme is all about, I still find it is a film that can be viewed again and again. I would also say it is Wes Cravens best film closely followed by The Serpent and the Rainbow. I must also say David Hess who plays the part of psychopath Krug gives a very strong convincing performance, convincing the audience that he's a real psycho, but I doubt they would've given him an Oscar due to the nature of the film and the part he played.
There isn't much gore in the film but what there is allot of is sexual and psychological violence so if you are of the squeamish or moralistic type then steer well clear of this film, otherwise I think you'll enjoy it.
