The new film Hellboy is the latest in a long line of movies based off of comic books. Unlike the rest of it's counter parts of recent years Hellboy isn't based off of a Marvel Comic but the work of Mike Mignola put out by independent comic publisher Dark Horse comics. Your typical Superhero Hellboy is not! He is a Demon from Hell that was brought to us by an accident during a Nazi experiment. This is a comic book film so it is rated your usual PG-13 a gorefest it is not, but it’s one hell of a good time!

The film opens with some brief text explaining about the seven gods of chaos locked in the crystal prison in a dimension of darkness. We then cut to a Nazi camp in Scotland in 1944, the first thing you see is lots of strange equipment and a very evil looking Nazi dressed in an all black leather SS uniform and a wicked looking black mask that resembles a gas mask.

We then see that the Nazi's are being spied on by a group of American soldiers. Along with the American's is a British scientist Dr. Broom who is the one that knows what the Nazi's are up too. Of course the American's don't really believe a word of all this supernatural business. As the group gets closer on the Nazi Camp Dr. Broom spots the Nazi dressed all in black and tells the American's that the man is Kroenen Hiltler's top assassin that if he is there things are worse than he feared.

Well Next we see a Rasputin who is the one performing the ritual to open the gateway which he indeed does, as soon as it is opened we get a glimpse inside at what looks like a vast dark starless space and a huge dark crystal with some slithering forms inside.

The American's attack we get to see Kroenen in action for the fist time with a gun he never misses when he runs out of bullets out comes the Blades! He is great to watch and will remind everyone of Darth Maul of Star Wars Episode I. In the battle Dr. Broom is wounded and takes a shot in the leg. The Americans get a grenade near the portal device and manage to blow it up. Kroenen does his best to stop the grenade and loses his right hand and gets impaled on a nice large piece of metal for his trouble.

As the portal closes Rasputin still wearing the crazy looking glove he put on his right hand to open the portal gets sucked into it and dies or so we think. So after Dr. Broom has them searching the grounds of the Nazi camp, since the portal was open too long and something could have come through, as they soon find something did come through a baby Hellboy. The American's want to shoot him but Broom stops them and keeps him.

Flash forward to present day with the head of the F.B.I. on TV talk show telling every one there is no Hellboy and no B.P.R.D (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense). We then cut to a young man on a scooter approaching a large black gate and then an intercom system which he punches a specific number and tells them he is a F.B.I. agent John Myers. Then the intercom face plate folds down a retinal scanner pops out to identify the young man. He checks out and in he goes.

Once inside the security guy at the desk knows everything about him, the guard tells him to watch his hands and elbows and down he goes as the section of floor he is standing on begins its downward descent into the bowls of the B.P.R.D. Then he winds up in a room with a large window looking out into a water tank Were inside is Abraham 'Abe' Sapien who is a kind of a Fish man who politely says can you turn the pages please pointing to some books lined up facing the tank.

He read four books at a time we soon learn from Dr. Broom who is standing behind Myers out of sight. Myers look startled. Dr. Broom comes up behind him and Myers introduces himself and Abe starts telling all types of personal information about him. Myers asks how it knows so much about him. Broom tells him he knows and his name is Abe Sapien and that he has a unique brain and can read thoughts and gets impressions off of objects letting him know the Past. He explains that he was found in a research tank the basement of a Hospital that was abandoned and that is how they found out his name was Abraham apparently named after Abraham Lincoln since he was born the day Lincoln was killed.

From here Myers goes to meet Hellboy, and Broom doesn't go with him since they aren't speaking. We find out from the agent at Hellboy's door that Broom grounded him. Even though Hellboy is in his 60's he doesn't age like a human the agent explains it as reverse dog years that Hellboy is barely out of his 20's.

Myers notices a comic book of Hellboy and picks it up as he is looking at the cover you hear a deep gruff voice say I hate those comic books they never get the eyes right. Myers looks up astonished and says Hellboy as he is looking at this big muscular red guy lifting weights. Hellboy tosses the weights aside and lights up a cigar from the first moment we see the character the way Ron Perlman plays the part you can tell the character is going to be great and he is, he has a great dry wit, some of his lines in the film a priceless, and when it comes time to throw down with the monsters he really rocks. That is as detailed as I will get with the review since I just wanted to set up a feel for the film for anyone that had no clue what it would be like. Let's just say what follows in one hell of a fun, crazy action monster movie with Hellboy fighting monsters putting an end to the resurrected Rasputin's plot to bring the gods of chaos to earth.

The special effects are amazing and fit the film well. The awkward romance between Hellboy and the fire starter Liz Sherman played by Selma Blair makes for some great Comedic moments and some touching ones as well. Director Guillermo del Toro best known for Blade II and Devils Backbone did a wonderful job directing the film. It is never once boring and is visual wonderful. The whole cast of the film is top notch as well Ron Perlman who is most famous as the Beast from the 1980's TV series Beauty and the Beast is without a doubt the star of the movie his performance as Hell boy is perfect. Rick Baker's Hellboy makeup is an amazing adaptation and shows he is still on of the masters at making the fantastic Real. Steven Wang's Makeup on Abe Sapien is simply breath taking. The digital creatures and stunt men by Tippet Studios never fail to Impress.

In closing if you like comic book films, cool monsters, action film, and special effects go see this movie. Has my point gotten across yet? Go see this movie so why are you still sitting there reading get to the theater :) As far as rating Hellboy gets a 10/10 in my book.
