Our movie starts out on June 19, 1961, on a dark and stormy night of course. A doctor arrives at a woman's house, who's in labor. The doctor has to cut the baby out. After the lady wakes up she asks the doctor if the child is alright, the doctor tells her no.
We then cut to 20 years later and we're taking to a sorority house. We're taking through an opening sequence that shows different girls doing different things around the house. Then we're introduced to Katey who's talking with her mother about her not wanting to move back home. Vicki then comes in and talks Katey into staying the weekend so she can help out with the graduation party they have planned. We then go to a hospital where we see the lady, Mrs. Slater, and the doctor, Dr. Beck, from 1961. They're talking about problems that Mrs. Slater and suffering and she's threatening to expose him for what he did way back when. Mrs. Slater turns out to be the House Mother to the house in our movie. When she returns home later that night she finds the girls sitting around drinking and talking about their future. She comes in and tells them they are not suppose to be here after the 19th and that they need to leave the next day. Later that night Vicki comes home with her boyfriend and they go upstairs to her room. Mrs. Slater hears them and finds them having sex, so she attacks Vicki's waterbed with her cane.
That pisses Vicki off. The next day while standing around the dirty, disgusting swimming pool (it hasn't been cleaned in years) they come up with an idea for a prank to pull on Mrs. Slater to get back at her. Katey opposes the idea.
The next morning Mrs. Slater finds the girls hanging up decorations for their party. She yells at them to take everything down and to get out. Vicki notices that Mrs. Slater doesn't have her cane and points it out and tells her it's out by the pool. It's actually in the pool, floating on a little inflatible tube. Vicki pulls out a gun and tells her to go in after it. Mrs. Slater refuses so Vicki fires the gun once to prove that its loaded. But the other girls didn't think that it would be loaded and are now freaking out. Liz tries to take the gun away and accidentally gets shot. Mrs. Slater decides to get in the pool. Vicki goes ahead and shoots her anyways, but surprise, she was shooting blanks. Until she fires one last time, but this time it's the real thing and kills Mrs. Slater. All the other girls are freaking out now, crying and wondering what to do. Vicki decides to hide the body in the pool till they can come up with something better, cause their party is about to start. That night they attend their party like nothing happened, except for Katey, who hides in her room crying. But soon her blind date, Peter, arrives and talks her into going downstairs.
The girls have a little scare when they hear a couple of guys trying to throw some girl into the pool, but they're able to stop them in time. Stevie then decides to cut the power to the pool lights in case someone tries to turn them on. A little later on three guys for some reason try to go swimming in the nasty pool. The girls notice and run down to stop them, but then the pool lights are turned on and they notice that the body is gone. So the go back inside and trying to figure out what's happened to Mrs. Slater body? And Stevie too, cause she never returned. The split up to go look for Mrs. Slaters body, except for Katey who runs off. Morgan goes upstairs to pack away Mrs. Slater's clothes when something comes down from the attic and hits her. The girls find her and the body of Mrs. Slater. The decide to move her to someplace else. Vicki, Liz, Jeanie and Diane take the body down stairs and cram her into a big garbage can, while Diane runs and gets one of their vehicles and takes it to the old garage where they can load the body without being seen. While this is going on Katey is looking around the house for Morgan, who ran off earlier, but can't find her. She finally ends up in the attic and looks around, finding a bunch of old children's toys. She then gets a scare from Peter who followed her up to the attic, but she talks him into going back downstairs. While that's happening Vicki, Jeanie and Liz role the garbage can into a sitting Campus Security car. Jeanie runs back to the house. Just as the security man is looking into the can he gets called back to the station. Meanwhile Jeanie runs into out villain but is able to escape and get into the house, but our killer eventually follows her inside and does the deed.
Vicki and Liz finally get the body to the garage but Diane is nowhere to be seen, so they jump into the van and take off. The go to a nearby cemetery where they plan to bury the body in one of the fresh graves. Katey finds Mrs. Slater's medical alert bracelet and calls the number on it. She gets ahold of Dr. Beck and tells him that some of her friends are missing and she doesn't know where Mrs. Slater is. The doctor tells her to stay put and he'll be right over. Dr. Beck arrives and Katey takes him up to the attic and he tells her how Mrs. Slater and him met. Katey looks out a window and sees something in the pool, so Dr. Beck and her go down to investigate and find the bodies of her missing friends. The doctor calls the cops and tells them to meet him at the cemetery that the other two girls went to. On the way there Katey tells him everything. When they get there Katey finds Vicki and Liz in the grave. So they head back to the house and on the way Katey realizes that the cops never arrived and asked the doctor about it. He tells her that they are not coming and drugs her and takes up stairs. He then tells her the story of Mrs. Slater's son Eric and how he came about and how he must capture it by using her as bait. She's able to get away though and while chasing her Dr. Beck runs into Eric and gets, well you know. Katey sees Eric standing over the doctors body and runs away, finally ending up in the attic. But surprise, the killer is there waiting for her. Well I won't spoil the ending for you. You'll just have to watch it yourself.
The House on Sorority Row is a pretty decent little early 80's flick. It has a decent story, in my opinion. Now I didn't say it was an original idea cause it's not, but I liked it nonetheless. Some people might consider this a Black Christmas rip off, but do I dare say it? I liked this movie better than Black Christmas. You may throw the tomatoes at me now! The acting was fairly decent, it wasn't over the top nor was it to cheesy. This was the writer/director Mark Rosman's first feature film to my knowledge and I thought he did a great job on this film. It really kept me guessing at who the killer might be.
The score by Richard Band is amazing. It really set the mood in certain scenes. Helped to keep the suspense levels high. The title track is a great little number. Band did an outstanding job on this score.
As for the killings, they are fun but nothing to special about them. But I did like the murder weapon of choice though. I won't tell you what it was, you'll just have to watch and see for yourself. There is little blood in the kills, well except for this one scene in the bathroom where you see one of the girls head in the toilet. That was an amazing shot. You need to watch this movies just so you can see that. It's pretty cool.
Now if you're looking for a great little flick to watch late at night in the dark with a big bag of popcorn, then I would recommend The House on Sorority Row. It has all the right qualities of a decent slasher flick and is sure to keep you guessing.
Oh and I almost forgot about a great line in this movie. "I'm a sea pig." You have to watch it to find out what that means! haha
