Twenty-five Years With The First Of The "New Age" Monsters
He Always Comes Back On Halloween Night (p. 3 of 4)

By: David Knoles

In 1998, 20 years after the release of "Halloween," Jamie Lee Curtis decided to return to the role that made her famous – and achieve "closure" from her days of the queen of "B" scream – by appearing in "Halloween: Twenty Years Later (H20)." Following the storyline in which Laurie had faked her own death and moved to California in order to fool her homicidal brother, "H20" takes off where "Halloween II" left off, abandoning the story lines of "Return of Michael Myers," "Revenge of Michael Myers" and "Curse of Michael Myers." Michael himself looks a little tired in this outing, and not too terribly menacing or frightening. And in the final battle between brother and sister, he literally loses his head.

But while "H20" was supposed to have been both Jamie Lee Curtis' and Michael Myers' swan song to the "Halloween" series, both were back in 2002 in "Halloween Resurrection." At the beginning of "Resurrection," It's explained that Laurie made a mistake and chopped off the wrong guy's head, landing her in a mental institution. Of course, she's ready for Michael to come calling, but not quite ready enough, since Michael is able to do what he'd been trying to do for 23 years, namely stab her with a butcher's knife and throw her off the top of a building. From there, "Resurrection" turns into a sort of also ran version of contemporary horror films such as "The House on Haunted Hill," "The Haunting" and "The Blair Witch Project" as a live Internet show is web cast from the Meyer's house in Haddonfield on Halloween night. Of course, none of the participants of the show roaming around the house release that Michael has been living on rats in the basement for over 20 years and the killing spree continues.

A lot has gone on between "Halloween" in 1978 and "Halloween Resurrection" in 2002. In fact, between the two distinct story lines and one film that deviated from the Michael Myers legend altogether, it is probably the most confusing series of horror movies ever made. Still, nearly ever horror fan has seen one or more of the Halloween films. So here are some brainteasers to separate the "Halloween" survivors from the Michael Myers victims.

QUIZ STARTS HERE

  1. When John Carpenter wrote "Halloween" it had a different title. What was it?
  2. Michael Myer's trademark mask is the most easily identifiable in any horror film, and it remains the hottest selling mask in every costume shop year after year. But where did it come from, and whose likeness does it actually bear?
  3. Donald Pleasance played Michael's psychiatrist in five of the Halloween films. But his name, Sam Loomis, was borrowed by Carpenter as tribute to an earlier horror movie by a director he greatly admired. Who was that director, and what was the film?
  4. Pleasance was the only name actor in the first "Halloween." What young actress, who was destined to become an "A" list Hollywood star, was introduced in the movie?
  5. "Halloween II," released in 1979, was a true sequel in the sense that it began precisely where the original film ended to complete a single night of horror. So between the two, how many victims did Michael do in?
  6. In "Halloween," Laurie Strode's friend Annie refers to a six-hour horror movie marathon that's supposed to be on television while the two girls are baby-sitting. Clips from all three of the movies featured in the fictious marathon are seen in "Halloween" and "Halloween II." What was the name of the horror movie show, and what were the three movies it featured?
  7. Two versions of "Halloween II" were made, one for theaters, and a slightly altered version for television. What was the major difference between the two?
  8. Everyone knows that Michael burned up along with Dr. Loomis and the entire hospital at the end of "Halloween II." What happened to him in "Halloween III, Season of the Witch?"
  9. At the beginning of "Halloween 4, the Return of Michael Myers," Michael is being held in the maximum-security wing of an insane asylum. What happens at the beginning of the film to set him on a rampage?
  10. They say that clothes make the man. So what do Michael Myers and his young niece share in common in "Halloween 4?"
  11. In "Halloween 5, the Revenge of Michael Myers," Michael's niece asks to see his face. Although she gets to see it, the audience doesn't. Was there ever any time in any of the Halloween films where Michael was unmasked and the audience did get to see his face?
  12. In "Halloween, the Curse of Michael Myers," Michael is confronted by an obsessive teenager named Tommy Doyle, who was the child Laurie Strode was baby sitting in the original "Halloween." What was the name of the girl Laurie was baby-sitting as well?
  13. What story point does "Halloween III, Season of the Witch," and "Halloween, the Curse of Michael Myers" share in common?
  14. "Halloween II" began with a 1950's pop tune, which was played again in the credit roll and then revived at the beginning of "Halloween H20." What was the song, and what group performed it?
  15. The Halloween series established a tradition – which continues in "Resurrection" – of showing at least one brief (and sometimes not so brief) gratuitous scene in which a young actress appears partially nude. Which of the movies broke with this tradition?
  16. And finally, what does the Halloween series and John Carpenter's 1980 film "The Fog" have in common?
The answers are on next page
